Learn to pray
A whole lot of religious teaching has given us the impression that praying is complicated. It’s not. It was never meant to be. At its simplest and purest, prayer is simply talking with God.
Jesus Himself took issue with anyone trying to make it anymore than that to impress God in some sad attempt to answer them . He said:
“And when you come before God, don’t turn that into a theatrical production either. All these people making a regular show out of their prayers, hoping for stardom! Do you think God sits in a box seat?
“Here’s what I want you to do: Find a quiet, secluded place so you won’t be tempted to role-play before God. Just be there as simply and honestly as you can manage. The focus will shift from you to God, and you will begin to sense his grace. (Matthew 6:5-6) The Message
God is not impressed or moved by our eloquence; He is moved by our faith and sincerity. He doesn’t need convincing to listen to you; He’s your Heavenly Father who loves you and cares not just for you but for everything about you.
So, don’t worry about whether you’re doing it “right”. Don’t feel like there’s some trick to making God listen to you. Just be yourself. Believe He cares. Believe He is listening. And ask for what you need and say what you need to say. You can’t go wrong by being simple and honest.
